A suffocating cold, thick and cloying, seeped into the very marrow of my bones. It wasn't merely the absence of heat; it was a hungry void, a presence that clawed at the edges of my senses, whispering promises of oblivion. This was not the gentle chill of twilight, nor the biting frost of a winter's night. This was the breath of the Shadow Entity, and it had found us.

The vibrant hues of the sanctuary, once so comforting, now seemed to dim, leached away by an encroaching grey. The laughter of the fae children playing near the crystalline river turned to whimpers, their wings drooping as if weighted by an unseen burden. Even the stoic elves, usually so composed, cast nervous glances towards the perimeter of the settlement, their hands instinctively reaching for the hilts of their swords. A palpable dread settled over us, a collective gasp held captive in a thousand throats.

I gripped Kael’s arm, my nails digging into the silken fabric of his tunic. His own hand, strong and steady, covered mine, a silent anchor in the rising tide of fear. His eyes, usually pools of inscrutable obsidian, now held a flicker of something akin to alarm, a depth of concern I hadn't seen before. "It's here," I breathed, the words barely a whisper against the rising wind that carried the scent of decay.
