Zoe had always possessed a knack for understanding the unspoken. It wasn't just a feeling or an intuition; it was a deep, resonant connection that allowed her to perceive the subtle nuances of the world around her, especially when it came to animals. This was why, as the Curious Explorers Club gathered in the dappled sunlight of the town park, her attention was drawn not to the weathered pages of the explorer's notebook, nor to Leo’s latest, predictably sparking contraption, but to a small, iridescent starling perched on a low-hanging branch of an ancient oak.
The starling, with its glossy black plumage that shimmered with hints of purple and green, seemed remarkably unafraid. It cocked its head, its beady black eye fixed on Zoe, and let out a series of chirps and whistles that, to anyone else, would have sounded like the usual avian chatter. But to Zoe, it was different. It was a frantic, almost urgent melody.
“It’s trying to tell me something,” Zoe murmured, her brow furrowed with concentration.
