The digital world hummed with promises. It was a symphony of clicks and confirmations, each one a tiny whisper of assurance. I scrolled through pages, each one a testament to what someone, somewhere, was willing to guarantee. A freelance artist swore their work would be delivered by Tuesday, with a money-back promise if it wasn’t. A seller online offered a refund if a rare comic book wasn’t in mint condition. Even simple game updates came with assurances of bug fixes and smoother gameplay. It was like a digital marketplace overflowing with IOUs, each one shimmering with the potential of being kept.

“It’s so easy, isn’t it?” I muttered to myself, leaning closer to my screen. The words flowed across the pages with such confidence, such certainty. It was almost too easy. A few keystrokes, a digital signature, and a promise was made, seemingly solid and binding. But that’s where the unease began to creep in, like a tiny crack in a perfectly smooth surface.

I remembered the artist promising their work. What if ‘Tuesday’ meant Tuesday in their time zone, and I was in mine? What if their definition of ‘mint condition’ was different from mine? The digital words were there, clear and bold, but the meaning behind them felt slippery, like trying to catch mist.
