The words hung in the air, not spoken aloud, but imprinted somehow, like a brand on my mind. “Niekas negali buti reikalas. Atiduoti savo doc. Garantijas losi.o mashinai yra so. Socialinid kodeksas. Tiknano centas yra lodimu mashina verta. Imkit tik tiek manos… is dangaus cripto.” Elara had said them, or something very like them, a cascade of Lithuanian that felt both ancient and brand new. I’d asked her what it meant, and she’d just smiled, that knowing, infuriating smile. “It means,” she’d said, her voice like wind chimes in a summer breeze, “that some things are worth more than any coin, digital or otherwise.”

Now, sitting with Ben at our usual corner booth at "The Daily Grind," the aroma of roasted beans a comforting constant in my increasingly confusing world, I wrestled with that thought. Ben was stirring his coffee, his brow furrowed as he listened to me ramble. He was my rock, my anchor in the swirling seas of crypto and code.

“So, she said something about not being able to give away your documents, and that guarantees are like a gambling machine, and that the social code is… what? Worth a nano cent?” I tried to translate, my Lithuanian still a bit clunky. “And then something about taking only a little of her ‘mano’… from heaven crypto?”
