The screen glowed with a familiar, comforting blue, but my mind was a tangle of wires and flashing warnings. Elara’s words, usually delivered like carefully chosen jewels, had been more like scattered shards of glass lately. “The social code,” she’d said, her voice a low hum that always seemed to vibrate with a deeper meaning, “isn’t written in ink, Alex. It’s etched in the gaps, in the silence between the clicks.” And now, staring at the endless scroll of transactions, at the digital promises that glittered and vanished like fireflies, I was starting to understand.
Ben, bless his solid, unshakeable presence, was trying to pull me back to solid ground. He’d found me hunched over my laptop, the faint scent of burnt toast clinging to the air from a forgotten snack. “Still chasing ghosts in the machine, Alex?” he’d asked, his voice a warm rumble that always felt like a hug. He’d perched on the edge of my desk, his eyes scanning the screen with a mixture of concern and mild bewilderment.
“It’s not ghosts, Ben,” I’d replied, though even to my own ears, it sounded a little like I was trying to convince myself. “It’s… patterns. Connections. The unwritten rules.” I gestured vaguely at the screen, where strings of code and wallet addresses danced a silent ballet. “Elara talks about this ‘social code,’ and I think I’m finally seeing it. It’s like… the rules of a game no one actually explains, but everyone somehow knows.”
