The scent of pine and damp earth, usually a comforting embrace, now seemed to carry a different weight. Carter found himself lingering by the makeshift den he’d fashioned for the wolf, his gaze sweeping across the deepening shadows of the woods. It had been three days since he’d found the creature, three days of hushed movements, whispered reassurances, and the quiet rhythm of healing. The wolf, which he’d begun to think of as Shadow, was slowly regaining its strength. Its flank, once a raw, weeping wound, was now knitting itself together, the strange, swirling markings beneath the fur fading from angry crimson to a muted, almost ethereal silver.

But it wasn’t just Shadow’s recovery that occupied Carter’s thoughts. The forest itself seemed to be changing. The usual cacophony of nocturnal sounds – the rustling of unseen creatures, the distant hoot of an owl, the skittering of mice – had softened, replaced by a profound stillness. It was a stillness that felt less like absence and more like a held breath. The air, too, had taken on a peculiar vibrancy, a subtle hum that resonated deep within Carter’s bones. It was as if the very trees were exhaling a silent energy, a palpable awareness that prickled his skin.

He noticed it first in the behavior of the smaller woodland inhabitants. A family of deer, usually skittish and prone to bolting at the slightest disturbance, had grazed near his clearing for an extended period, their large, liquid eyes unblinking, almost serene. A normally territorial fox, its fur a fiery streak against the muted greens and browns, had passed within a few yards of Shadow’s den, its tail held low in a gesture that seemed more of deference than aggression. Even the birds, whose dawn chorus had always been a boisterous affair, now sang with a softer, more melodic cadence, their songs weaving through the trees like threads of pure sound.
