The air in the clearing hung thick and still, a palpable hush that seemed to absorb even the rustle of leaves. Carter stood at the edge of the ancient grove, his breath catching in his throat. Beside him, the wolf, its flank still bandaged, nudged his hand with its muzzle, a silent urging. Elara, her face serene, her eyes reflecting the dappled moonlight, stood a few paces behind, a silent sentinel.
“This is it,” Elara murmured, her voice barely disturbing the quiet. “The Heartwood.”
Carter’s gaze swept over the grove. It was unlike any part of the forest he’d explored before. The trees here were colossal, their bark gnarled and ancient, their branches reaching towards the sky like skeletal fingers. A soft, ethereal glow emanated from the very center of the grove, a pulsating luminescence that seemed to breathe with a life of its own. At its heart stood a single, magnificent tree, its trunk impossibly wide, its leaves a vibrant, shimmering emerald, even in the dim light. It was from this tree that the light seemed to originate, a beacon in the deepening night.
