The air in Carter’s small cabin had grown thick with a peculiar stillness, a silence that pressed in on him more than any sound. It was the kind of quiet that precedes a storm, or perhaps, he thought with a shiver, something far older and more elemental. The wolf, whom he had taken to calling Ember for the way its eyes seemed to hold embers of a dying fire, was stirring. Its breathing, once shallow and ragged, had deepened, growing steadier, more resonant. Carter watched from the shadowed corner of the room, his heart a tight knot of apprehension and a strange, burgeoning hope.

Ember’s injured leg, splinted and bandaged with painstaking care, twitched. A low groan, less of pain and more of a primordial stretching, escaped its throat. Carter instinctively reached for the bowl of water he’d placed nearby, his movements slow and deliberate, lest he startle the creature. He had spent the last few days in a blur of foraging for herbs, cleaning wounds, and whispering reassurances to a wild thing that, by all rights, should have been tearing him limb from limb. Yet, it hadn't. It had watched him with an intelligence that unnerved him, a wariness that slowly, painstakingly, began to soften.

As Ember pushed itself higher on its forelegs, a faint luminescence began to pulse from beneath the crudely bandaged fur. Carter’s breath hitched. He’d noticed the markings before, subtle, almost like faint scars etched into the wolf’s hide, but now, in the dim light of the single oil lamp, they were undeniable. Intricate patterns, swirling and geometric, seemed to glow with an inner light, a soft, ethereal blue that painted the rough-hewn walls of the cabin with fleeting, otherworldly hues. It was as if the wolf was shedding its earthly disguise, revealing the celestial tapestry woven into its very being.
