Elara reveals fragments of her own knowledge, speaking of the forest's heart and the role of its guardians. She helps Carter interpret the wolf's markings as a map of ancient power.
The air in Elara’s small cottage was thick with the scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke, a comforting balm after the unsettling night Carter had endured. He sat across from her, the injured wolf, whom he’d taken to calling ‘Shadow’ for the way he moved even when hurt, resting on a pile of old blankets by the hearth. Shadow’s breathing was shallow, but steady, the raw wound on his flank cleaned and bandaged with Elara’s practiced hands. Carter watched the wolf, his heart a tight knot of worry and wonder. The markings, stark and alien against Shadow’s dark fur, seemed to pulse with a faint, inner light when the firelight flickered.
Elara, her face a roadmap of gentle wisdom etched by time and sun, stirred a pot of fragrant tea. “You did well, Carter,” she said, her voice soft as falling leaves. “To trust your instinct. Not everyone would have.”
Carter looked up, meeting her calm gaze. “It… it didn’t feel like a choice, Elara. It felt like I *had* to.” He gestured towards the wolf. “And those markings… they’re not like anything I’ve ever seen.”
