The silence that followed the wolf's pained cry was more profound than any noise Carter had ever known. It was a silence that pressed in, heavy with unspoken questions and the scent of damp earth. He knelt beside the creature, his hands trembling as he reached out, not to touch, but to feel the warmth radiating from its injured flank. The makeshift bandage, secured with strips of his own torn shirt, seemed impossibly fragile against the raw reality of the wound.
