The dusty road leading to the King’s sprawling citadel felt like a path to the gallows. Kael’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs, each beat echoing the terrified whispers that had haunted his dreams for years. He clutched the worn leather pouch at his side, its familiar weight a small comfort against the gnawing fear. A royal summons. The words themselves had sent a tremor through him, a cold dread that seeped into his bones. Had they found out? Had someone seen him, unearthed his secret? The thought was a sharp stab. He was a simple villager now, living a life as unremarkable as the stones beneath his feet. But beneath that quiet facade lay a secret as ancient and potent as the roots of the great oak where he had buried his past.

He remembered the hushed urgency of the figure who had pressed the crown into his trembling hands, the phantom chill of their touch, the desperate plea to run, to hide. He remembered the terror, the gnawing grief for his parents, the raw ache of being utterly alone. And then, the oak. Its gnarled branches had offered a silent sanctuary, its deep roots a silent guardian. He had buried the crown, a heavy burden he had been too afraid to even look upon, and with it, he had buried a part of himself. He had sought peace in the quiet rhythms of village life, the predictable cycle of seasons, the shared laughter and simple sorrows of his adopted community. Now, it seemed, his carefully constructed peace was about to shatter.

The citadel gates loomed, imposing and wrought from dark iron, guarded by soldiers clad in polished steel, their faces impassive. Kael swallowed hard, forcing himself to meet their impassive gazes. He was no longer the trembling boy who had fled into the night. He was a man, shaped by years of quiet resilience, by the silent wisdom he had absorbed from the earth, from the rustling leaves, from the very air he breathed. But still, the fear lingered, a serpent coiled in his gut.
