Chapter 4
Years of Quiet
Kael grows into a young man, the crown a buried secret. He lives a simple life, but the memory of his parents and the whispers of the crown linger in his dreams.
The years passed like the slow turning of seasons, each one painting the small village of Oakhaven with its own gentle hues. Kael, once a boy on the cusp of adolescence, was now a young man, his frame broadened, his hands calloused from honest work. The memory of that night, the screams that tore through the silence, the chilling emptiness that followed, was a scar etched deep within him. Yet, time, the great healer, had softened its sharp edges, leaving behind a dull ache, a persistent echo in the quiet chambers of his heart.
He lived a simple life, a life of routine and quiet dignity. He helped the farmers mend their fences, assisted the woodcutters in their tasks, and learned the ways of the baker, his bread becoming as sought after as any in the neighbouring hamlets. Oakhaven was a haven, a place where the past felt distant, a forgotten dream. The villagers, kind and welcoming, had embraced him as one of their own, their simple joys and sorrows becoming his. He found a measure of peace in their uncomplicated lives, in the rhythm of the sun rising and setting, in the predictable turn of the earth.
But peace, Kael was beginning to understand, was often a fragile thing. Beneath the surface of his carefully constructed normalcy, a current of unease still flowed. At night, when the village slept and the moon cast long shadows across his small cottage, the whispers would return. They were faint at first, like the rustling of leaves in a distant wind, but they grew, weaving themselves into his dreams, coalescing into fragmented images, hushed voices that spoke of his parents, of a burning urgency, of a golden circlet that pulsed with an inner light.
