The air in Kael’s small hut, usually thick with the comforting scent of drying herbs and woodsmoke, now felt thin and sharp, pricking at his senses. It had been years since he’d first felt that prickle of unease, that faint shiver that ran down his spine like a cold draft, even on the warmest of summer days. But lately, it had intensified, growing from a whisper to a persistent hum beneath the surface of his days. The whispers from the Crown of Whispers, once a gentle murmur of guidance, now carried a frantic edge, like a flock of birds suddenly taking flight.

He sat by the hearth, the embers casting dancing shadows that seemed to stretch and contort into unsettling shapes. The Crown, nestled safely in its linen wrappings on a shelf above, pulsed with a faint, internal light, a silent beacon that Kael had learned to read. Tonight, its light was agitated, its hum a low thrumming that vibrated through the very wood of the hut.

*Danger… closer… not friend…* the whispers coiled in his mind, fragmented and urgent. They weren't the clear pronouncements he usually received, the gentle nudges towards wisdom and understanding. These were raw, primal instincts, a scream of warning.
