The immediate threat had been quelled, the immediate battle won, but the echoes of betrayal and the chilling realization of how close they had come to utter ruin lingered like a persistent shroud.
Kael found himself standing on the ramparts, the chill morning air biting at his exposed skin, a stark contrast to the warmth that had bloomed in his chest with Lyra’s hand in his during the final, desperate moments. Below, the academy grounds were stirring. Students, their faces etched with a mixture of relief and newfound apprehension, moved with a subdued energy. The usual boisterous laughter and competitive shouts were muted, replaced by hushed conversations and watchful glances.
