The roar of the crowd was a familiar lullaby, a symphony of crimson and white that had sung me to sleep and woken me up with dreams of glory since I was a boy. But lately, that roar felt different. It wasn't just the cheers for touchdowns or the groans at a missed tackle; it was the murmur beneath it, the hushed tones that sometimes followed Robert. I’d been on the fence, I’ll admit it. Seeing him out there, with his bright eyes and that determined set to his jaw, was one thing. But understanding how he fit, how he could possibly be part of this team, the Alabama Crimson Tide, that was another.

Coach Saban had put him in, hadn’t he? Not in a way that made sense to my football brain. Not lining up at safety, not running routes as a receiver. No, Robert had his own spot, his own job. He was the… the signal caller, of sorts. Not for the plays, not the complex X’s and O’s that Coach drew up on the board. It was more subtle. He’d watch the opposing team’s sideline, his head cocked, his eyes, those big, earnest eyes, scanning the signals being flashed. Then, he’d tap his helmet, a sharp, distinct sound, and point to his ear. Coach Saban had said it was about disrupting their rhythm, about throwing them off their game. A small thing, maybe, but Coach Saban didn’t do small things unless they mattered.

Still, I’d seen the whispers, the sidelong glances from some of the older guys. “What’s he even doing out there?” I’d heard it. And a part of me, the part that had bled crimson and white my whole life, the part that understood the brutal, unforgiving nature of this game, had wondered the same thing. Robert was… different. He moved differently, he thought differently. He had this incredible spirit, this unshakeable belief in himself and in the Tide, but football was a game of split-second decisions, of raw physicality, of instinct honed by years of brutal repetition. Could Robert, with his unique way of processing the world, truly keep up? Could he contribute without becoming a liability?
