Chapter 7
Silas's Smile
Anya encounters Silas Blackwood, a charming but unsettling guest. He offers condolences and feigns ignorance, yet his eyes hold a calculating glint. Anya feels a prickle of suspicion, a dissonance between his words and his demeanor.
The air in Suite 3B hung heavy, thick with the metallic tang of dried blood and a silence that screamed of violence. Detective Anya Sharma moved through the cramped space with a practiced, almost gentle efficiency, her eyes absorbing every detail, every misplaced object, every subtle disturbance in the otherwise mundane decor. The Crimson Tide Motel, even in its faded glory, had a way of clinging to its stories, and Suite 3B was currently broadcasting a particularly grim one.
She’d spent the morning wading through the motel’s melancholic atmosphere, a place where peeling wallpaper seemed to sigh and the perpetually dim lighting felt like a permanent twilight. Mrs. Gable, the motel’s manager, a woman whose beehive hairdo seemed to defy gravity and whose stories meandered like a forgotten river, had been Anya’s first stop. Mrs. Gable had offered a tearful, if somewhat embellished, account of the victim, a Mr. Alistair Finch, a quiet man who kept to himself, a man who never bothered anyone. Anya had listened, her mind filing away the fragments, the nervous tics, the way Mrs. Gable’s gaze flitted away whenever the conversation skirted too close to the motel’s less savory history.
Then there was Leo ‘The Bookworm’ Jenkins, a fixture in the motel’s communal lounge, his nose perpetually buried in a well-worn paperback. Leo, with his shy demeanor and startlingly observant eyes, had offered a few more concrete details – a strange car parked outside Suite 3B the night of the murder, a fleeting glimpse of a figure slipping into the shadows. He’d been eager to help, his voice a soft murmur, his hands fluttering nervously as he recounted what he’d seen, or thought he’d seen. Anya had left him with a sense of quiet gratitude, a feeling of a small, crucial piece of the puzzle clicking into place.
