The air in Suite 3B, even after the initial sweep, still felt heavy, thick with the lingering scent of something metallic and the ghost of a struggle. Detective Anya Sharma moved with a practiced, almost weary grace, her gaze sweeping over the contents of the victim’s hastily packed suitcase. It was a jumble of ordinary things – a few changes of clothes, toiletries, a worn paperback novel – but Anya knew that beneath the veneer of the mundane, secrets often hid. She’d learned that lesson a hundred times over, each one etching a little deeper into her own weary soul.

Her gloved fingers brushed against something stiff beneath a folded sweater. Pulling it out, she found a small, leather-bound journal. It was well-used, the corners softened with handling, the pages filled with a neat, almost frantic script. This was it. This felt like the key. She settled onto the edge of the unmade bed, the springs groaning in protest, and opened the journal.
