The air in Leo’s shop had always felt charged, a low hum of untold stories and forgotten whispers. But lately, it had taken on a different tenor, a melancholic stillness that settled over me like a shroud. Each visit, once a vibrant exploration, now felt like tiptoeing through a minefield of unspoken words, a delicate dance where every step was measured, every breath held.

I’d brought him a small sketch, a charcoal study of the intricate carvings on an antique music box I’d admired on my last visit. It was a peace offering, I suppose, a silent plea for the warmth that had begun to recede from his eyes. He’d accepted it with his usual quiet grace, his fingers brushing mine as he took the paper. But the spark, the electrifying jolt that used to accompany such fleeting touches, was gone, replaced by a polite distance that pricked at my heart.

“It’s beautiful, Cecilia,” he’d said, his voice smooth, almost too smooth. He’d held it up, his gaze sweeping over the delicate lines, but I felt as though he were looking through it, not at it. His eyes, those deep pools that had once drawn me in with their mystery, now seemed to hold a carefully constructed barrier, a polished surface that reflected nothing of his true self.
