The air in Leo’s shop had always held a certain magic, a comforting weight of stories held within the polished wood and aged paper. But lately, for me, it felt different. It was as if a veil had descended, a subtle shift in the atmosphere that mirrored the growing distance between Leo and me. He was still charming, still possessed that effortless grace that had first drawn me in, but there was a new reticence in his eyes, a carefulness in his words that hadn’t been there before. The easy laughter we’d shared, the spontaneous conversations that had spun out like threads of gold, seemed to have faded, replaced by polite exchanges and carefully chosen silences.

It started after I’d found that small, tarnished silver locket tucked away in a velvet-lined drawer. He’d been so quick to dismiss it, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his face before he’d steered the conversation away. It was a fleeting moment, barely noticeable, but it had lodged itself in my mind, a tiny seed of doubt that had begun to sprout. I’d tried to shake it off, telling myself I was being overly sensitive, that perhaps he was just having a bad day, or that the weight of running the shop was simply getting to him. But the feeling persisted, a gnawing unease that coiled in my stomach.

One afternoon, I arrived with a small canvas, eager to show him a new sketch inspired by the intricate patterns of an old Persian rug. He was polishing a brass telescope, his back to the door. The familiar scent of lemon oil and old paper filled the air, but the usual warmth seemed to have receded.
