The air in Madame Dubois’ shop always felt thick with stories, a palpable weight of unspoken histories. Today, though, it felt heavier, more charged, as if the very dust motes dancing in the shafts of sunlight were holding their breath. I had come back, drawn by an invisible string, a yearning to understand the quiet pull I felt towards this place, and more importantly, towards Leo. He wasn’t in the front of the shop today, which was unusual. Usually, he’d be there, a silent, watchful presence, his gaze often snagging mine across the room, a silent question hanging between us.

Instead, it was Madame Dubois who emerged from the shadowed depths of the back room, a faint smile playing on her lips. She moved with a grace that belied her age, her eyes, the colour of faded denim, seemed to hold a universe of knowing. She carried a small, intricately carved wooden box, its surface worn smooth by countless touches.

“Cecilia,” she said, her voice a low murmur, like the rustle of old parchment. “You return. The shop has a way of calling to those who are meant to hear its whispers.”
