The silence in Leo's small apartment, usually a comforting hush, now felt thick with unspoken words. Outside, the city hummed its familiar lullaby, but inside, only the soft ticking of a clock punctuated the air. I sat across from him, the lamplight casting a warm glow on his face, highlighting the shadows that clung to his eyes. He had finally begun to speak, his voice a low murmur, weaving a tapestry of a past I hadn't known existed. Each word was a carefully placed stitch, revealing a landscape of pain and loss that had shaped him into the man I had come to love.

He spoke of a time before the antique shop, before the quiet sanctuary he had built for himself. He spoke of a family, of laughter that echoed through sun-drenched rooms, and of a love so profound it had felt like the very air he breathed. Then, the shadows had fallen. A sudden, brutal storm that had swept through his life, leaving behind only wreckage and a void that threatened to swallow him whole. I watched his hands, usually so steady, now clenching and unclenching in his lap. His gaze was fixed on some distant point, a place I couldn't reach, a memory I couldn't share.

"It was... sudden," he finally said, his voice catching. "A accident. The kind you read about, the kind you think could never happen to you. But it did. And it took them all." He paused, swallowing hard. "My parents, my younger sister... gone. Just like that." The finality in his tone was a physical blow. I could feel the weight of his grief pressing down on him, a burden he had carried alone for so long.
