The Unveiling
Moved by Cecilia's courage and heartfelt plea, Leo's defenses finally crumble. He begins to speak, the words tumbling out, revealing the weight he has carried.
The air in Leo’s shop, usually a comforting balm, felt heavy, charged with an unspoken question. My heart, which had been beating a frantic rhythm against my ribs, seemed to hold its breath. His gaze, usually so direct and yet so carefully veiled, was now a raw, open wound. It was as if a dam had broken within him, and the floodgates were finally, irrevocably, giving way. I watched, my own breath catching, as the carefully constructed walls he’d built around himself began to crumble, brick by painstaking brick.
“Cecilia,” he began, his voice a low murmur, rough with emotion he rarely allowed to surface. It was the sound of a man wrestling with ghosts, with a past that had clung to him like a shroud. He looked down at his hands, calloused and strong, but trembling now as they rested on the worn mahogany counter. “There are things… things I haven’t spoken of. Not to anyone. Not ever.”
I took a hesitant step closer, my own insecurities a tiny whisper in the back of my mind, but drowned out by the overwhelming need to understand, to offer solace. “You don’t have to,” I said softly, my voice barely a breath. “But if you want to… I’m here. I’m listening.”
