The Artist's Resolve

Faced with the possibility of losing Leo, Cecilia finds a new strength. Her fear of abandonment surfaces, but her desire for connection overrides it.

The air in my small studio, usually alive with the scent of turpentine and the quiet hum of my own creative energy, felt heavy and stagnant. It had been days since I’d last seen Leo, days since that conversation – or rather, that *lack* of conversation – had left a hollow ache in my chest. The vibrant colours on my easel seemed to mock me, their cheerfulness a stark contrast to the muted tones of my own spirit. Chapter 10 had ended with a storm of doubt, and it felt as though that storm had settled permanently over my heart.

I’d replayed our last encounter a hundred times, each memory a sharp shard of glass. His guardedness, his quick retreat into that familiar silence, it all spoke of a wall I couldn’t seem to breach. And with each passing hour, a cold dread began to creep in, the old, familiar tendrils of fear tightening around me. Abandonment. The word itself was a phantom limb, a pain I’d learned to live with, but never truly forget. It whispered insidious doubts: *He’s not ready. He’ll never be ready. You’ll end up alone, just like before.*

My fingers, usually so sure when holding a brush, now trembled as they traced the outline of a half-finished portrait. It was a self-portrait, but the face staring back was pale and uncertain, its eyes wide with a fear I couldn’t quite shake. I splashed a dollop of crimson onto my palette, a colour that had once felt so full of passion, so alive. Now, it seemed to bleed into the canvas like a wound.
