A Storm of Doubt
A misunderstanding, perhaps fueled by Leo's evasiveness, threatens to shatter their fragile bond. Cecilia questions if she's read the signs correctly.
The air in Leo’s shop had always felt charged, a hum of unspoken histories and latent potential. Today, however, it felt different, heavy with an unspoken question that hung between us like a shroud. We had been walking a tightrope, Leo and I, each step carefully placed, each word weighed. But a frayed rope, I was learning, could snap without warning.
It had started innocently enough. I’d been sketching in my studio, the afternoon sun slanting through the dusty panes, illuminating the swirling colours on my palette. I was trying to capture the ephemeral quality of light on old wood, a subject I’d found myself drawn to lately, ever since I’d first stepped into Leo’s emporium. My charcoal stick danced across the paper, forming the rough outlines of a forgotten chest, its brass fittings tarnished with time. But my mind wasn’t on the wood grain or the patina. It was on Leo’s hands, the way they moved with such practiced care as he handled delicate porcelain, the faint tremor I’d sometimes caught when he thought I wasn’t looking.
A sudden memory, sharp and clear, surfaced: Leo, a few days ago, showing me a small, intricately carved wooden bird. He’d held it out, his fingers brushing mine, and for a fleeting second, his guard had slipped. His eyes, usually so carefully neutral, had held a flicker of something akin to pain, a deep, ancient sorrow. He’d quickly pulled back, his charming smile snapping back into place, but the glimpse had been enough to stir the unease that had been simmering within me. What was he hiding?
