Chapter 6
A Gentle Encounter
Antoinette meets a kind young man. Their first conversation is marked by shared smiles and a surprising ease, hinting at a connection beyond mere acquaintance.
The afternoon sun, a benevolent presence, spilled through the stained-glass windows of the old church, painting the worn wooden pews in hues of amber and rose. Antoinette, her heart still humming with the quiet reverence of the service, lingered in the vestibule, the scent of old hymnals and polished wood a comforting balm. She was grateful for these moments of peace, for the grounding certainty of faith that had always been the bedrock of her life. It was in these hushed spaces, far from the boisterous laughter of game nights or the gentle, sometimes firm, pronouncements of her parents, that she felt most truly herself.
A soft rustle of movement drew her attention. Standing near the heavy oak doors, his head tilted as if admiring the intricate carvings, was a young man. He wasn't someone she recognized from the parish, nor from the familiar faces of her neighborhood. He had a quiet presence, a gentle stillness that seemed to absorb the golden light around him. As she watched, he turned, his gaze meeting hers. There was a moment of surprised recognition, not of knowing, but of seeing. His eyes, a warm hazel, held a kindness that immediately put her at ease. A faint smile touched his lips, a tentative offering, and without conscious thought, Antoinette returned it.
He took a step towards her, his movements unhurried. "Good afternoon," he said, his voice a low, pleasant baritone. "That was a beautiful service."
