Chapter 12
A Brother's Support
Antoinette's brother senses her distress. He offers simple, unwavering support, a reminder of the unconditional love that surrounds her, even in difficult times.
The quiet hum of the house, usually a comforting lullaby, felt like a distant echo to Antoinette. She sat by her bedroom window, tracing the condensation with a fingertip, each swirl a reflection of the turmoil within. The previous day’s misunderstanding replayed itself in her mind, a persistent, unwelcome guest. His words, meant to be gentle, had landed like stones, and her own inability to explain, to bridge the chasm of her own confusion, had only widened the rift. She hugged her knees to her chest, the familiar weight of her family’s love a heavy blanket she couldn’t quite pull close enough.
A soft knock at her door broke the spell. Antoinette flinched, not expecting anyone, and certainly not wanting anyone to see her like this, adrift in her own private storm. “Come in,” she called, her voice barely a whisper.
Her brother, David, poked his head in, his usual cheerful demeanor softened with a hint of concern. He was a year older than her, a steadfast presence in her life, a constant reminder of the simple, pure love that had always been her anchor. “Hey,” he said, his voice low. He entered the room, closing the door gently behind him, and sat on the edge of her bed. He didn’t press, didn’t demand answers, just sat there, a silent, comforting presence.
