Episode 2

The colossprix lay eggs and they hatch. The colssoprix watch their young

The pale, dappled light of Dialamia Laksisa filtered through the canopy, illuminating the rough-hewn nest. Elara, her scales a shimmering emerald, nudged the clutch of eggs with her snout. Each one was no larger than a dewdrop, their shells a delicate, translucent pearl. Beside her, Kael, his scales a deeper, richer green, offered a rumbling purr of reassurance. They had spent weeks meticulously constructing this haven, weaving together the softest mosses and the finest strands of nutrient-rich fungi. Now, the waiting began.

Days bled into nights, marked by the slow crawl of Dialamia’s twin moons across the alien sky. Elara and Kael took turns guarding the nest, their keen eyes scanning the undergrowth for any sign of danger. The air hummed with the constant symphony of the jungle – the chirps of unseen insects, the rustle of leaves, the distant, guttural calls of larger, more formidable creatures. Elara’s heart, a tiny, rapid drum, would quicken at any unusual sound, but Kael’s steady presence always soothed her.

Then, a tremor. A faint, almost imperceptible vibration emanating from within one of the pearl-like shells. Elara leaned closer, her breath catching in her throat. A hairline crack spiderwebbed across the surface. Then another. And another. With a series of soft pops, the shells began to give way.

First, a tiny snout poked out, followed by a miniature, perfectly formed head. Its eyes, still cloudy with the remnants of the egg’s fluid, blinked slowly. Then, another hatchling emerged, and another. Soon, four minuscule Colossoprix, no bigger than Elara's thumb, were wriggling amongst the remnants of their shells.

Their wings, still damp and folded, twitched feebly. They were a pale, almost translucent green, lacking the iridescent shimmer of their parents. Elara nudged the first one gently, her rough tongue delicately cleaning away the sticky residue. It let out a high-pitched chirp, a sound so delicate it was almost lost in the jungle’s roar. Kael rumbled, a deep, resonant sound that seemed to vibrate through the very ground.

The hatchlings, disoriented but instinctively drawn to warmth and safety, began to shuffle closer to their parents. Elara and Kael positioned themselves around the tiny brood, their bodies forming a protective barrier against the world. The tiny creatures, somehow sensing the loving presence, nestled against their parents' scales, their small bodies radiating a fragile warmth.

Over the next few days, the hatchlings grew stronger. Their wings began to unfurl, revealing a delicate network of veins. Their eyes cleared, becoming sharp and inquisitive, reflecting the vibrant colors of their surroundings. They would practice tentative hops, their tiny legs still clumsy, and their wings would flutter in short, uncoordinated bursts, lifting them a mere inch or two off the ground.

Elara and Kael watched with a mixture of pride and trepidation. They would bring back the tiniest, most nutrient-rich insects and regurgitate them for their young, a painstaking process that required immense energy. The hatchlings, with their insatiable appetites, would peck eagerly at the offerings, their tiny beaks working with surprising efficiency.

One afternoon, as the sun began its descent, casting long, golden shadows through the trees, the smallest hatchling, its wings a vibrant emerald already, took a tentative leap. It fluttered, its wings beating with a newfound strength, and for a glorious, heart-stopping moment, it was airborne. It hovered, a tiny speck of life against the vast backdrop of Dialamia Laksisa, before landing unsteadily a few feet away.

Elara let out a soft trill of joy, while Kael’s rumbling purr intensified. The other hatchlings, inspired by their sibling’s success, began to flap their wings with renewed vigor. The nest, once a quiet sanctuary, was now alive with the sounds of tiny chirps and the frantic beating of nascent wings. The cycle of life on Dialamia Laksisa continued, a testament to the enduring resilience of its wondrous creatures.
