The air in the Visitors Welcome Center hung thick with the scent of pine and something else, something older, like damp earth and forgotten secrets. Ranger Katja Becker ran a gloved hand over the smooth, cool surface of the oak counter, her gaze sweeping across the rows of brochures. “Logan Canyon: A Hiker’s Paradise,” “Discover the Wonders of Our Caves,” “Your Gateway to Adventure.” They seemed so innocent, so utterly devoid of the chilling emptiness that had settled over the valley like a shroud. Fourteen visitors. Fourteen souls who had walked through these doors, brimming with the bright promise of exploration, and then… nothing.

Carol Lawson Reed, her silver hair pulled back in a neat bun, her eyes a startlingly clear blue, offered Katja a gentle smile. It was a smile that held the warmth of a hearth, but Katja was beginning to see the flicker of something else behind it, a guarded knowing. “Still no word, dear?” Carol’s voice was soft, laced with a sympathy that felt just a touch too practiced.

Katja shook her head, the movement tight. “Nothing. It’s like they vanished into thin air. No tracks, no disturbed earth, no sign of struggle. It’s… unnatural.” The word felt less like an observation and more like an admission, a crack in the pragmatic armor she’d worn for years.
