The hum of the refrigerator was the only sound in Katja’s small cabin, a monotonous drone that usually lulled her to sleep. Tonight, however, it was a jarring counterpoint to the cacophony in her mind. Sleep, so often a welcome escape, had become a terrifying landscape of swirling mist and shadowed shapes. She’d been tossing and turning for hours, the phantom chill of the canyon clinging to her skin despite the rising desert heat outside.

Then, it began. Not a gradual drift into slumber, but a sudden plunge, as if the floor had dropped out from beneath her. The drab walls of her cabin dissolved, replaced by a suffocating darkness that pressed in on all sides, thick and ancient. It smelled of damp earth, of roots twined deep within the planet, and something else… something floral, yet wild, like night-blooming jasmine. A faint luminescence bloomed ahead, a glow that seemed to emanate from the very air, painting the inky blackness with bruised purples and spectral blues.

She found herself standing on a path, not of gravel or packed dirt, but of smooth, dark stones that pulsed with a faint, internal light. The air grew cooler, carrying the whisper of unseen water and the rustle of leaves that weren’t there. Towering trees, their branches skeletal and reaching, clawed at the bruised sky, their forms indistinct, shifting like smoke. A profound silence settled, more potent than any sound, a silence that seemed to absorb all noise, all thought.
