The air in the old town hall felt thick, heavy with unspoken accusations and the scent of aged wood. Anya stood at the head of the long, polished table, her gaze sweeping across the faces seated before her. Marcus Thorne, his usual veneer of concerned leadership firmly in place, sat at the far end, his eyes holding a practiced warmth that now felt like a polished stone. Beside him, a few other familiar faces, community pillars whose names were whispered in the same breath as the town’s prosperity, shifted uncomfortably. They were the Council, or at least, the public face of it. Anya knew, with a certainty that settled like ice in her gut, that the true Council of Shadows was far more elusive, far more dangerous.
“We’ve been over this,” Marcus began, his voice smooth as river stone. “Elder Silas’s disappearance has been a terrible shock. We’re all doing everything we can to find him.”
Anya’s jaw tightened. “Doing everything we can? Or doing everything you *want* me to believe you’re doing?” She met Marcus’s gaze directly. “I’ve seen the inconsistencies. The convenient silences. Elder Silas wouldn’t just vanish. He was a man of principle, a man who held this community together. And he was afraid.”
