She huddled deeper into the alcove of a darkened shop, the damp seeping through her thin jacket, a mirror to the chill that had settled in her bones. It had been two days since the Purifiers’ first wave, a brutal, surgical strike that had ripped through their fragile network of hidden sanctuaries. Two days of running, of glimpsing the panicked faces of strangers who suddenly held powers they couldn’t comprehend, their eyes wide with a terror Maya knew all too well.

A guttural roar, amplified by the echoing alleyways, sent a tremor through the concrete beneath her feet. It wasn’t the sound of any animal she knew. It was raw, primal, and laced with a chilling hunger. Then, a flash of searing blue light, followed by a shriek that was cut brutally short. Maya squeezed her eyes shut, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. They were hunting them, not just with weapons, but with something else. Something that fed on fear, on the very essence of their newfound strangeness.

A flicker of movement at the alley’s mouth. Maya tensed, ready to bolt, but the figure that emerged was not a Purifier. It was a woman, her silhouette stark against the rain-slicked street, her movements fluid and powerful. Seraphina. Her fiery red hair was plastered to her head, but the intensity in her eyes, even from this distance, was unmistakable. She held something in her hand, not a weapon, but a small, glowing orb.
