Chapter 6
A Hunter's Doubt
Kaelen, the Purifiers' ruthless leader, tracks Maya. Witnessing her power and the Anomalous's struggle, a flicker of doubt about his mission begins to surface within him.
The rain fell in sheets, a relentless drumming against the corrugated iron roof of the abandoned warehouse. Kaelen stood at the edge of the rooftop, the wind whipping his dark coat around him, the scent of ozone and damp concrete stinging his nostrils. Below, in the flickering light of a single, bare bulb, Maya was cornered. He’d tracked her for days, a phantom through the city’s forgotten veins, his Purifiers a silent, efficient tide at his back. But this… this was different.
He had expected fear, a desperate flight. What he saw instead was a raw, untamed power radiating from her, a nascent storm contained within a fragile human shell. They were a motley crew, a terrified flock of pigeons, but they looked to her, their eyes wide with a desperate hope that twisted something in Kaelen’s gut.
His purpose was etched into his very being, a creed hammered into him from the moment he’d joined the Purifiers. Anomalies were a contagion, a deviation from the sacred natural order. They were errors in the grand design, destined to be purged. He had seen the worst of them, the ones who succumbed to their power, who reveled in its destructive potential. He believed, with every fiber of his being, that he was saving humanity.
