Maya stood at the edge of a makeshift perimeter, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. Beside her, Dr. Thorne, his face etched with a weariness that went beyond mere fatigue, adjusted the sensor array. Its delicate needles quivered, not with the familiar signatures of human bio-energy, but with something vast and incomprehensible. Kaelen, his usual stern mask now fractured by a grim respect, stood a short distance away, his gaze sweeping the horizon. His Purifiers, their ranks thinned but their resolve hardened, moved with a synchronized efficiency that Maya, in other circumstances, would have found chilling. Now, it was a comfort.

“It’s… it’s not biological, Maya,” Thorne murmured, his voice barely audible above the low thrumming that seemed to emanate from the very fabric of reality. “Not in any way we understand. It’s a distortion. A ripple in the fundamental forces.”
