The air crackled, not with the usual static of burgeoning power, but with a palpable dread. Outside the reinforced bunker, the sky wept a sickly green, a luminescence that painted the scarred earth in hues of unease. Inside, the silence was a heavy blanket, suffocating and thick with unspoken tension. Maya stood at the edge of the makeshift council, her gaze sweeping across the faces of her own kind and the grim visages of their former persecutors. The Purifiers. Kaelen, his posture rigidly unyielding, met her eyes, a flicker of something unreadable passing between them. It wasn't respect, not yet, but perhaps a grudging acknowledgment of shared peril.
Dr. Aris Thorne, his usual academic composure frayed at the edges, cleared his throat. "The seismic readings are… unprecedented. And the atmospheric anomalies are intensifying. Whatever this is, it’s not an extension of our own abilities, nor is it directed at us specifically. It’s… external. And it’s growing." He gestured towards a flickering holographic display, a chaotic swirl of energy patterns that defied conventional scientific explanation. "The energy signatures are unlike anything we’ve ever recorded. They’re… ancient. And immense."
Seraphina, her arms crossed tightly, her knuckles white, scoffed. "So, we’re supposed to believe this isn’t just another one of your elaborate Purifier traps, Thorne? You lure us into a cave, and then unleash some alien boogeyman?" Her voice, usually a tempest, was laced with a desperate weariness. The recent skirmishes had taken their toll, leaving behind a residue of anger and fear.
