The air in Poenari was a perpetual sigh, a melancholic exhalation that clung to the stones like a shroud. It wasn’t the damp chill of autumn, nor the biting frost of winter; it was something deeper, something inherent to the very mortar that held these ancient walls together. I’d felt it from my first step onto the winding path, a subtle tremor beneath my boots that resonated not in the earth, but in my bones. The guides, their voices hushed and reverent, spoke of history, of battles, of Vlad the Impaler, but their words felt like thin veils draped over a churning, unseen current. It was the silence between their sentences, the flicker of unease in their eyes when they spoke of the higher ramparts, that truly held my attention.

My own journey here had been less a scholarly pursuit and more a magnetic pull, an insistent whisper that had grown into a persistent hum in the back of my mind. Logic dictated a structured approach, a methodical dissection of chronicles and unearthed artifacts. But Poenari wasn't a place that yielded its secrets to mere logic. It demanded something more primal, something that bypassed the intellect and spoke directly to the soul. It demanded intuition.

I’d spent days wandering its courtyards, tracing the worn grooves of centuries with my fingertips, listening. Not with my ears, but with the quiet hum that had become my constant companion. It was a strange sensation, like feeling a phantom limb, a part of myself that had been dormant for years suddenly stirring awake. The stones seemed to pulse with a faint, internal light, a memory of heat and life and, yes, blood. They spoke of a purpose far older than Vlad, a purpose etched into their very being before he, or any of his kind, had ever set foot here.
