The wind, a constant, mournful presence at Poenari, seemed to carry more than just dust and the scent of pine. It carried whispers, fragments of forgotten conversations, the sighs of those who had long since turned to dust. I’d spent weeks here, my fingers tracing the rough-hewn stones, my mind sifting through the layers of history, and with each passing day, the castle’s story deepened, becoming less about fortifications and more about the very essence of being human. It wasn't just a strategic stronghold for a bloodthirsty prince; it was a crucible, forged in ambition, tempered by fear, and stained with sacrifice.

The grandeur of Vlad’s reign, the chilling efficiency of his reign of terror, had been the focus of my recent efforts. I’d walked the same ramparts where he’d surveyed his domain, imagining the glint of his eyes, the cold calculation behind his every move. I’d deciphered the grim poetry of his decrees, the chilling logic that justified his brutality. But as I sat in the crumbling courtyard, the midday sun casting long, distorted shadows, I felt a shift. The battlefield, the political machinations, the sheer force of his personality – they were all part of the story, yes, but they were not the whole story. Poenari had existed long before Vlad, and its stones held memories far older than his reign.

I remembered the discovery in Chapter 4, the hidden chamber beneath the main keep. The faint, almost imperceptible scent of something ancient, something earthy and primal, still clung to the air. It wasn’t the smell of decay, but of something preserved, something that had been deliberately sealed away. The cryptic inscription, barely legible on a stone tablet, spoke not of defense or dominion, but of appeasement, of offering. The word “sacrificium” had appeared, stark and undeniable, a stark contrast to the military pronouncements I’d grown accustomed to. It hinted at a purpose far more profound, and far more terrifying, than mere defense against invading armies.
