The air, once thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, had turned acrid, laced with the metallic tang of fear. Two years. Two years of whispered peace, of tentative smiles, of the fragile hope that the scars of the last war would fade. Two years since Marylu’s tears had mingled with mine in the quiet embrace of the forest, her grip so tight it felt like she was trying to anchor me to this world, to this life. I’d thought, foolishly, that the worst was over. That we, together, had silenced the storm. But the universe, it seemed, had a cruel sense of irony.

The first sign was the sky. Not the gentle blush of dawn or the fiery descent of sunset, but a bruised, unnatural twilight that clung to the horizon like a shroud. Then came the tremors, not the familiar rumble of the earth settling, but a deep, guttural groan that vibrated through my very bones, a pain that felt ancient and wrong. Marylu, always the first to sense the shift, had looked up from the small garden she’d painstakingly cultivated at the edge of the woods, her eyes wide with a dawning dread that mirrored my own.

“Daisy,” she’d whispered, her voice a fragile thread against the growing unease. “Something’s wrong.”
