The scent of roasted beans, a familiar comfort, always seemed to cling to Elara like a second skin whenever she stepped out of "The Daily Grind." It was a scent that promised warmth, conversation, and, lately, a prickle of something akin to unease. She’d been nursing this feeling for weeks, a subtle dissonance that had begun as a faint hum and was now crescendoing into a distinct melody of suspicion. It all started with a turn of phrase, a turn of thought, that felt too familiar, too intimate to be mere coincidence.

She sat at her usual corner table, a half-finished sketchpad open before her, the charcoal smudging her fingertips. Liam, ever the attentive host, had just delivered her latte, a perfect swirl of foam crowning the dark liquid. He’d even, with a casual flourish, added a tiny, almost imperceptible dusting of cinnamon in the exact pattern she’d described in her latest letter to… him. Or rather, to the phantom who inhabited the pages of the library book.

"Everything alright, Elara?" Liam’s voice, a warm baritone that always managed to soothe her jangled nerves, cut through her reverie. He leaned against the counter, wiping it down with a practiced rhythm, his gaze steady and kind.
