The emerald canopy, once a riot of dappled sunlight and the vibrant hum of life, now sagged under a perpetual twilight. Each leaf seemed to absorb the gloom, the very air heavy with an unvoiced sorrow. Elara, her heart a tight knot of apprehension and fierce resolve, stepped deeper into the hushed boughs of Whispering Woods, the silent sentinel of her childhood now a somber testament to Morwenna’s reign. Beside her, a small procession of her creations chirped and whirred, their metallic bodies gleaming dully in the muted light.

There was Pip, a robin with a cheerful, if slightly tinny, trill, his tiny gears whirring with practiced enthusiasm. Next came Wren, a delicate sparrow whose song was a cascade of clear, bell-like notes, each one a tiny spark against the oppressive silence. And then, perched on her shoulder, was Finch, a diminutive finch whose melody was a gentle, lilting tune, like a lullaby whispered on a breeze. They were her first brave foray, the vanguard of her rebellion, their mechanical hearts beating with the rhythms of defiance.

“Stay close, my dears,” Elara murmured, her voice barely a breath. “Morwenna’s magic runs deep here. It feeds on silence, on fear.”
