The air in Whispering Woods had grown thick, not with mist or the scent of pine, but with a palpable tension, a heavy cloak woven from fear and suppressed magic. Morwenna, ensconced in her obsidian tower that pierced the perpetually twilight sky, felt it first as a faint tremor in the ether, like a plucked string vibrating in the stillness. It was a foreign note in the symphony of silence she had so painstakingly orchestrated. Her fingers, long and skeletal, traced the runes etched into the polished surface of her scrying orb. The usual placid, inky blackness swirled, coalescing into a hazy, distorted image of the forest floor, dappled with the unnatural gloom.

A tiny spark of light, impossibly vibrant, flickered at the edge of the orb’s vision. It was a craft, a delicate thing of polished brass and gleaming copper, no larger than her fist. And from it, a sound, faint but clear, a tentative chirp that pricked at the edges of her carefully constructed silence. Morwenna’s breath hitched, a dry, rasping sound. It was the sound of defiance, a melody daring to bloom in her sterile garden of quiet.

“No,” she hissed, her voice like the grinding of stones. “Not here. Not now.”
