The air in the clearing crackled, not with the usual damp chill of the Whispering Woods, but with a volatile energy that vibrated deep in Elara’s bones. Before her, Morwenna stood cloaked in shadows that seemed to writhe and deepen with every passing second, her eyes burning with a cold, ancient fury. The enchantress’s outstretched hand pulsed with a sickly green light, the very source of the oppressive silence that had choked the forest for so long.

Elara, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs, clutched the small, intricately carved wooden bird in her hand. It was the Nightingale, her masterpiece, its delicate gears humming with a contained power that felt both terrifying and exhilarating. Around her, a dozen other clockwork birds – sparrows with tinkling chimes, robins with cheerful whistles, finches with bright, warbling trills – perched on branches, their tiny gears whirring in anticipation. They were her army, her hope, her defiance.

“You dare,” Morwenna’s voice was a rasp, like dry leaves skittering across stone, “to defy me? To bring your infernal contraptions into my sanctuary of silence?”
