The next morning Ed was up early and sat in the square thinking, Layia came up behind him, they look at each other, Ed explains as much as he could, then tells her they will travel together and find the answers
The morning sun crept over the village, painting the rooftops in warm gold. Ed sat on the stone edge of the well in the square, his hands resting on his knees. He had not slept much after Angel Solis left. His mind was full of images—Seraphina’s face, the yellow flowers, the tiny bundle in white cloth.
Footsteps padded softly behind him.
Layia sat down beside him, her shield strapped to her back. She did not say anything at first. She just watched the birds peck at crumbs near the bakery.
