The road stretched ahead, dark and narrow, the trees pressing close on both sides. Ed walked with his hand resting on his sword hilt, his old cloak flapping behind him. The morning birds had fallen silent, and the air felt thick and watchful.
He had walked for hours when the forest opened into a clearing. In the center stood a figure wrapped in shadow, tall and still, like a blade waiting to be drawn.
