Chapter 10
The Pact of Ages
Elder Maeve reveals a crucial secret: an ancient pact that binds the Obsidian Bloodline to the land's balance. This knowledge is vital for Elara to truly understand and control the power.
The air in Elder Maeve’s dwelling was thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something ancient and earthy, like the heart of a mountain laid bare. My fingers traced the worn runes etched into the stone hearth, a nervous habit I’d picked up since Thorne’s shadow had begun to lengthen over our lives. Kaelen sat by the fire, his usual restless energy subdued, his gaze fixed on the flames as if searching for answers within their dance. Elder Maeve herself was a figure carved from the very essence of the land, her skin like weathered bark, her eyes holding the deep, quiet wisdom of centuries. She had spoken of the Obsidian Bloodline, of its power, but always with a veil of mystery, a deliberate withholding that now, in the face of Thorne’s escalating threat, felt less like wisdom and more like a dangerous secret.
"You speak of power," I began, my voice a little unsteady, "but what *is* it? The journal… it hints at so much, yet reveals so little. And Thorne… he craves it. He speaks of reshaping the world, of dominion. Is that what this power is for?"
Elder Maeve turned her gaze upon me, and it felt as though the very stones of her home were watching. "The Obsidian power, Elara," she said, her voice a low murmur, like wind through ancient pines, "is not a tool to be wielded, nor a weapon to be forged. It is a responsibility, a symbiosis. It is the pulse of this land, its very lifeblood, and your bloodline has been its guardian for generations untold."
