The forest canopy, once a cheerful tapestry of emerald and gold, now pressed in on Elara with a suffocating gloom. Each rustle of leaves, each snap of a twig, sent a fresh wave of unease through her. She clutched the worn leather of her satchel, the cryptic map a constant, reassuring weight against her hip. It was in the Heartwood, a place whispered about in hushed tones even in her own village, a place where shadows seemed to cling to the ancient trees like moss.

Days had bled into nights since she’d left the familiar comfort of her home. The initial thrill of discovery had been tempered by the harsh realities of the wild. Hunger gnawed at her belly, thirst rasped her throat, and the constant vigilance required to navigate the untamed wilderness was beginning to wear on her spirit. Yet, the image of King Theron, the benevolent ruler whose reign had ended in a mystery that had fractured her kingdom, spurred her onward. The map, a relic of a forgotten age, was her only guide, its faded lines and arcane symbols a puzzle she was determined to solve.

A sudden, sharp crack echoed from her left. Elara froze, her heart leaping into her throat. She strained her ears, her gaze sweeping the dense undergrowth. Was it a wild animal, or something more sinister? The stories she’d heard of this region were not all about natural dangers. There were whispers of men who preyed on travelers, of those who guarded secrets with a ruthless hand.
