The air grew heavy as Ange approached the jagged peaks that clawed at the bruised sky. Each breath felt like drawing in dust, a grim reminder of the blight that had leached the life from her home. The path, once a winding thread through verdant hills, was now a scar of cracked earth and brittle, skeletal trees. This was it. The fortress. A silhouette of sharp angles and malevolent intent against the dying light, it stood as a monument to the sorcerer's isolation.

A chilling wind, devoid of any natural scent, swirled around her, carrying with it the faint, mournful cry of something lost. It wasn't the howl of a beast, but a sound that resonated deep within Ange’s chest, a pang of shared sorrow. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in her mind: *“Power born of pain can be a cage, child. Sometimes, the strongest magic lies not in overcoming, but in understanding.”* Ange clutched the worn leather pouch at her side, its contents – a smooth river stone, a dried sprig of lavender, a small, intricately carved wooden bird – feeling more significant than ever. They were tokens of her world, of life, of hope.

The fortress loomed, its stone walls stained with an unnatural darkness, as if the very shadows had congealed and hardened. No banners flew, no guards stood watch. Only silence, thick and suffocating, greeted her. The massive iron gates, twisted and pitted like ancient bone, stood slightly ajar, an invitation and a warning. Taking a deep, steadying breath, Ange stepped across the threshold.
