Chapter 4
Guardian of the Gnarled Pass
Ange encounters Garrick, a magnificent griffin guarding a treacherous mountain pass. Initially fierce, Garrick tests Ange's courage and resolve before she can proceed on her quest.
The air thinned as Ange ascended, each breath a sharp, icy kiss against her lungs. The village of Oakhaven, a comforting smudge of thatched roofs and familiar faces, had long since vanished below, swallowed by the encroaching mists that clung to the foothills like a shroud. Here, the world was stark and grand, a symphony of grey stone and wind-whipped sky. The path, barely more than a goat track, snaked upwards, a precarious ribbon of dirt clinging to the sheer face of the Whispering Peaks. Ange clutched the worn leather pouch containing her meager provisions, her heart a drumbeat against her ribs, a mixture of trepidation and a fierce, unyielding resolve. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in her mind, not as a warning, but as a benediction: "The Gnarled Pass is a trial, child. Not of strength, but of spirit."
The wind howled, a mournful song that seemed to carry the very sorrow of the blighted land. It whipped Ange’s braid across her face, stinging her eyes, and threatened to tear her from her precarious perch. She pressed on, her boots finding purchase on loose scree, her gaze fixed on the jagged silhouette of the mountains ahead. This was the Gnarled Pass, the gateway to the lands beyond, and if the ancient texts were to be believed, the first true test of her quest.
As the path narrowed further, winding around a colossal outcropping of rock, a shadow fell over her. It was not the fleeting shadow of a cloud, but a vast, encompassing darkness that seemed to absorb the very light. Ange froze, her hand instinctively going to the simple wooden charm Elder Maeve had given her. A low growl rumbled through the air, a sound that vibrated in her bones, a sound of primal power and ancient fury.
