The sorcerer’s hands, gnarled and ancient as the roots of an old oak, trembled as he held forth the artifact. It pulsed with a light so pure, so incandescent, that it seemed to draw the very breath from the air. Ange, standing before him, felt the warmth seep into her bones, a balm to the weariness that had settled deep within her soul. The fortress, once a symbol of his suffocating power, now echoed with the soft hum of returning life. The stones themselves seemed to sigh, shedding the oppressive gloom that had clung to them for so long.

He watched her, his eyes, usually pools of shadow, now reflecting the artifact’s gentle radiance. The bitterness that had etched itself into the lines of his face seemed to soften, to recede like a tide going out. “Take it,” he rasped, his voice no longer a thunderclap of command, but a whisper of surrender. “Take it and go. Let this light mend what I have broken.”

Ange, her heart swelling with a mixture of relief and sorrow, reached out. Her fingers brushed against his as she took the artifact. A jolt, not of pain, but of shared history, passed between them. She saw it then, not just his pain, but the raw, gaping wound of his betrayal, the loneliness that had festered within him for so long. It was a pain so profound, so all-consuming, that it had twisted him into the creature he had become.
