The world swam in and out of focus, a nauseating kaleidoscope of shadows and distorted shapes. A metallic tang coated my tongue, thick and cloying, like old blood mixed with something acrid. I tried to move, to push myself up, but my limbs felt like lead, disconnected from my will. A low hum vibrated through the floor, a discordant thrumming that seemed to burrow into my bones. Then, a voice, oily and slick, slithered into the fog of my consciousness.

“There, there, my pretty little bird,” it cooed, a sound that sent shivers of revulsion down my spine. I knew that voice. The Fossil. The hired ghost, the man with the dead eyes and the smile that promised only pain. He’d been a shadow for weeks, a constant, unnerving presence, his whispers laced with promises of deliverance that always curdled into threats.

“You’re safe now,” he continued, his breath hot and foul against my ear. Safe? The word felt like a cruel joke. I was anything but safe. I was a prisoner in my own disintegrating body, a pawn in a game I hadn’t agreed to play. My family, those wolves in sheep’s clothing, had sent him. They’d paid him to break me, to finish what they’d started.
