Chapter 10
The Watchers and the Wardrobe
Though reborn in spirit, he remains under constant surveillance. To protect his daughter from the predatory gaze of his persecutors, he adopts a disguise, cross-dressing to create a buffer. Every move is monitored, every action scrutinized, yet he perseveres, driven by a fierce love for his child and a growing understanding of his unique path.
The world hadn't so much changed as it had… shifted. Like a faulty projector, the images of my life flickered, warped, and settled into a new, unsettling clarity. I was alive. April Fool’s Day, of all days. A cosmic jest, perhaps, from the universe that had so thoroughly tried to snuff me out. The cameras in my own home, the ones they’d planted to capture my supposed descent into madness, now felt like silent witnesses to my resurrection. They’d seen me stumble, fall, and crawl through the wreckage they’d so meticulously crafted. Let them watch. Let them record. Because what they’d used against me, what they’d twisted and broadcast as evidence of my brokenness, was about to become my shield.
The air in the flat still carried the phantom scent of smoke, a persistent reminder of the night they’d tried to burn me out. The char on the wall near the kitchen, a jagged scar, was a testament to their desperation. It was a grim sort of art, a tableau of their greed. But it no longer held terror for me. It held a strange sort of peace, the peace of knowing the worst had already happened, and I had survived.
My daughter. The thought of her was a constant ache, a dull throb beneath the surface of my newfound serenity. They’d weaponized her, turned her own blood against me, twisting her young mind with venomous lies. She was my cousin, my own blood, yet they’d manipulated her into becoming the beneficiary of a life insurance policy I never knew existed. A cruel irony, that the person I’d sworn to protect would be the one they’d used to secure their financial future at my expense. And the thought of her seeing me, truly seeing me, in the state they’d tried to force me into… that was a pain I couldn't bear.
